Interview with – The King!

Interview with - the King!

It took a lot of persuading but we got the chance of a lifetime to interview the most important figure in chess - the King!

In these series of exclsuive interviews, we want to get to know the real story behind each of the players, their likes and dislikes, their fears and their drive.

Interview between The Quiet Move and The King

The King

The Main Man, Numero Uno!

Getting to know you...

TQM

Hello, Sir!
We understand you're a bit of a big deal in the chess world! Can you tell us why?

The King

Hello - thank you! Yes, it's true I suppose. I am a bit of a big deal.
When I'm in trouble, all my army must come to my rescue as their #1 priority! If they don't we lose!

Even though I may not be as fast or able to do all the things some of the other pieces can do, it is vital they consider me the numero uno in their priority list!

TQM

Now, you said there you're not as fast and can't do everything other pieces are able to do but maybe tell our readers what you can do?

The King

I have some ability and I can move to any immediate square, either in a straight line or diagonally, so I am a bit like a slow queen!
I can also capture my opponent's unprotected pieces if they are on these squares, so I have some uses!

I am a bit like a slow queen!

TQM

Sometimes, the focus is a bit more on the other king, does that bother you?

The King

Not at all! As long as I am safe and well protected by my troops, I am often very happy to not be the centre of attention.
Our aim is to capture the other king anyway, so the less said about me, the better!

Alt king

King of rock and roll but not of chess

The man on stage - likes and dislikes

TQM

Our readers are often curious about the likes and dislikes of the players. Maybe you can first tell us what your likes are?

The King

That's a very easy question! I love my own pieces, especially when they are sheltering me from the opponent!

I also love when I have lots of freedom, especially near the end of the game when I can help some of my hard working pawns get a promotion!

TQM

I bet they are great times but there must also be some frustrations - after all, you're also public enemy #1 for the opponent! What are your dislikes?

The King

Sadly, there are some bad days at the office!
I really don't like being harrassed, checked and surrounded by the opponent, it makes me nervous and very weak!

I hate checkmate and also checks can be very annoying, as my whole army has to stop what they're doing to deal with them.
Sometimes, the checks aren't so bad but the checkmates...I don't want to think about them!

...the checkmates...I don't want to even think about them!

I also don't like it when I can't move or also when I have to move (Zugswang). This puts me under a lot of pressure and sometimes, it means we lose the game!

In general, I like being well protected and having no opponents pieces anywhere near me! When they are, I get very nervous!

Favourite Moments

TQM

You've been involved in so many games, do you have a favourite?

The King

I've had lots of memorable times but one of the most exciting times was when I helped my pieces checkmate the opponent in the middle of the game! That was really exciting and very unexpected.

Scary Moments

TQM

You are a strong piece but do you ever get scared?

The King

Of course! Any time I'm exposed to enemy attack is frightening! I remember once I had to run into the middle of the board, taking enemy pieces on the way but somehow made it back safely. That was very scary!

Teamwork

TQM

Throughout the game, which pieces do you work best with?

The King

In the opening, I like to get out of harm's way early and hang around with my knights, bishops and maybe have a rook by my side.

In the middle-game, I still want some cover from my troops and don't like too much exposure.

By the end of the game, I often get involved more strongly, either as a shepherd to my pawns or as another attacking piece...but I always need to be on my guard!

TQM

Thank you for your time!
